pink party

Monday, January 25, 2016

As much as I love hanging out in sweatpants, it's always fun to get dressed to the nines and go for full-on fabulous once in a while! As I mentioned in my last post, the company I work for hosts it's annual holiday party in January. Steve and I usually have a lot of fun with what we wear and this year was no exception. He wore a deep purple tux paired with a navy blue shirt with pink tiny polka dots and a blue plaid bow tie. I found a watermelon pink Kate Spade dress (that was on sale!) and a pair of black suede jeweled pumps from Nine West. I loved the whimsy of the pouf of the skirt and the bow on the back so much! I can't find it online, but there still some similar dresses here and here. (It also wrinkled like crazy and took for-ev-er to steam!) I finished it off with a pair of ear crawlers and lots of bracelets from Forever21, plus a velvet clutch from Target. Prepare yourself for some obligatory bathroom selfies, 'cuz I totally forgot to take any photos before we left.

I aaaam sitting in pajama pants and a hoodie as I write this, so it's all about that balance...

For my party makeup I thought it was the perfect opportunity to use the intense pink, Totally Fetch from the Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons palette. I swept Urban Decay's Tonic all over the lid for a lilac base. To make the pink shadow pop as a liner, I used the Nyx lip pencil in Dolly Pink to make wing, then layered Totally Fetch over the top of it. I added the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper starting about mid-way down the wing to add a little more more darkness to the liner. I popped some of Urban Decay's Cosmic Eyeliner (similar) in the inner corners for a shimmery highlight. I loved how fun the pink liner turned out! Who knows when I'll have an excuse for hot pink winged liner again?!

Do you like to have fun with fashion and makeup when you go out or do you stick with a more classic look? I seriously love trying new and different looks that get me out of my comfort zone. It can all be so much fun if you want it to be! Hope you all had a great weekend! I worked Saturday morning and went snowboarding Saturday night. I'm (slowly) improving each time we go, but I'm definitely not a natural athlete, so it's a slow learn for me, but I'm sure I'll get better!

the bottom lash mascara I swear by

Monday, January 11, 2016

Makeup lovers are known for trying out tons of products looking for that perfect piece. Hard to find in every category, but sometimes you really do discover The One.

I know I've found a Holy Grail in the Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara. This is exactly what I need and there are several reasons why I'll continue to repurchase it. (On tube number two right now!) The number one deal sealer for me is the wand. The itty-bitty fiber brush finds and grabs all of your lower lashes with a couple of swipes, and does it without getting mascara all over your undereye. That's all a woman wants, really.

A quick single coat is perfect for everyday wear, and you can build it up with a couple of coats for a more dramatic look. It's not waterproof, which makes a lot of sense to me. You really don't want to be scrubbing your more delicate and sparse lower lashes to remove mascara. Even though it's not waterproof, it wears well. I've never had any issues with smudging or flaking. I'm wearing it in the makeup looks below (the first pic is a little more natural, and the last two I have it built up a little more):

All in all, this is one of my top makeup picks and one of the few things that I repurchase when I run out. At $10.50, it's not an outrageous price for a mascara, either. One tube lasts quite a while for me, since you use less for the lower lashes than you would for your upper lashes each day.

Have you ever tried this? What's your favorite mascara for the lower lashes? Thanks to Kay from Shoes and Glitter for requesting this post! If you ever have a request for a post, feel free to leave it in the comments! Hope you all had a great weekend! We spent some of ours shopping for what we needed to complete our outfits for my company's holiday party coming up this Saturday (they have it in January annually). I finally found a pair of shoes to go with my dress, so I'll try to get some pics of our outfits while we're there to share with you! I'm so excited about the dress I found and just have to figure out what to do with my hair and makeup to tie it all together!

2015 beauty favorites!

Monday, January 4, 2016

2015 went by pretty quickly. I wouldn't say lightning fast or anything, but it's still kind of unbelievable that it's 2016 already. Before we dive into more beauty loves for the new year, let's rewind and roundup my favorite beauty goodies from the past year!

This past year was great for makeup discoveries and re-discovered loves. I finished up my first Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer and of course bought a second. The creamy consistency is so blendable and I love the coverage it gives. In the fall, after picking up the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette, I fell in love with using it daily for setting my concealer. I can see myself hitting pan sooner rather than later on this one. The NYX Microbrow Pencil in Ash Brown has been not only an everyday staple, but an amazing dupe for the Anastasia Brow Wiz. It gives nearly the exact result for a fraction of the price and I've already bought a backup. My love for this brow pencil runs that deep.

When it comes to contour and highlight, my top products picks were an easy choice. NYX HD Blush in Taupe is the only product I've used for months when I'm looking for those model cheekbones. A little goes a long way and it's so easy to blend and make look more natural, if that's possible. Of course, the highlighter of the year for me (and I'm sure a lot of the beauty community) has to be Becca x Jaclyn Hill Shimmering Skin Perfector in Champagne Pop. It's just that good. The gorgeous champagne tone and that light-catching shimmer have made it the one I reach for when I'm wanting The Glow.

I yammered on relentlessly this year about the Laura Geller Blush-n-Brightens, my favorite being Tropic Hues. The shade is my go-to when I'm not sure what blush to choose for the day since it goes with everything. If I had to start all over again buying blushes, this would be the first one I'd buy! Most days I reach for a more neutral lip shade and my beloved Revlon Lip Butter in Cotton Candy hasn't left my handbag for months! It's easy to apply without a mirror and the cool tone of the pink is perfection.

As a self-confessed eyeshadow lover (and hoarder), this list wouldn't be complete without a few eye products! My top pick would have to be the Laura Mercier Caviar Shadow Sticks. The consistency of the cream shadow is smooth enough to blend, but doesn't crease all day and won't fade on you after hours of wear. Amethyst is a winner, and I also really love Orchid and Sandglow. I really can't rave about these enough! I finally picked up the Too Faced Chocolate Bar eye shadow palette this year and I was so impressed with the quality of the shadows. I love to use this for both everyday and smoky looks, since its so versatile and gorgeous! I typically reach for the Urban Decay Roach Eyeliner, since it's bronzey-brown tones compliment my eyes and coordinate with just about any eye look. It's a smooth liner to apply and has a rich pigmentation.

I can say with certainty that 2015 was the year I finally found my signature fragrance. Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black is the the scent I've been looking for all these years. It's not too sweet or floral, and has a great balance of masculine and feminine to it. I'd recommend going and giving it a sniff rather than reading my terrible attempt to describe it! Out of all the nail polishes I've managed to amass, the shade I've been enjoying the most throughout the past year was Essie Chinchilly. The cool gray is a universally flattering shade that matches just about any outfit you could put on and makes you look effortlessly chic.

Now that 2015 is complete, I'm excited for what beauty gems have yet to be discovered throughout the next year! Let me know what your number one beauty product from 2015 was! Steve and I went snowboarding again over the weekend. For my second attempt, I definitely picked up a little more than the first time, but I still managed to bruise my tailbone and knees pretty badly. Sitting has not been fun lol.
