Maybelline Mascara: The Falsies vs The Rocket

Friday, May 30, 2014

Let's talk mascara. I have been a devoted Maybelline mascara user for a very long time. Once in a while I'll try something new, but I always seem to come back to this brand as they always deliver a great mascara.

I had been using The Falsies for a long time, pretty much since it debuted and I have absolutely loved it! It seems to be a favorite among a lot of others, too, as I've seen it mentioned in tons of YouTube tutorials. It makes my lashes look fuller, longer, and darker, which is pretty much all I'm looking for in a mascara. I loved the small brush that came in the Big Eyes version, since it worked so ridiculously well for my lower lashes and it's pretty hard to find lower lash wands in a drug store mascara. However, with all that being said, the most recent one that I bought was so disappointing! I don't know if I got a fluke batch or they changed the formula, but it applied clumpy, and was so difficult to remove that it left my eyes red, irritated and missing some lashes.

I decided to try The Rocket soon after as a (fingers-crossed) suitable replacement. I'd heard mixed reviews about this- it seems you either love or hate it. The wand had rubber bristles, which was new for me, but I think I'm actually liking them better than I thought I would. They seem to distribute the mascara better, without making those annoying globs where you don't want them as my old mascara did from time to time. Also, as the bristles are a bit shorter I find I have less incidents of mascara on my eyelid while applying than I did before (I must be a spazzy mascara applier, because this seems to happen to me waaaay too often lol). The mascara formula is extremely wet and the wand gives really good separation to your lashes, as well as a good amount of length. I'm definitely liking The Rocket and will probably re-purchase it when the time comes.

If you've tried these mascaras, I'd love to know your thoughts or what your favorite drug store mascara is!

Rimmel Scandal Eyes Shadow Paint

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Rimmel products have been on a winning streak for me lately and these shadows are no exception. I stumbled upon the Rimmel Scandal Eyes Shadow Paints while browsing around a few weeks ago and thought I would give them a try. I wasn't sure what I would think (a little skeptical about "paint" for eyes) but they turned out to be even better than I hoped for.
They come in a tube with a soft spongy applicator and they are extremely wet when you apply them (literally like paint on your eyelid)! They are more vibrant if you leave them unblended, but I typically blend out the edges to get rid of any harsh lines. If you do decide to blend them out, you have to do it in no more than 30 seconds, otherwise it dries and there's no way to blend it without adding more. My favorites are Peachy Apricot, which has a gorgeous golden goddess vibe, and Rich Russet, which is more a warm, shimmery brown.

Some of the color range is questionable and there's only a few that I would actually buy and use as shadow. I wasn't sure what they were thinking with the bright red and purple...those are certainly not for me... But overall I really like the few that I bought and have been using. Cream shadows are always nice in warmer weather and these have definitely been added to my makeup rotation.

Let me know if you've tried these and what you thought!

April Favorites!

Saturday, May 3, 2014

It's the beginning of May- that means it's time for April favorites! Mostly beauty items this month, but I also threw in a couple fashion and lifestyle items that I'm loving too.
My first favorite is definitely the Boots Extracts Coconut Body Butter. This smells so summery and is really creamy and moisturizing. I put it on when I get out the shower and it absorbs quickly. The scent lasts for hours and keeps my skin hydrated most of the day. It's also a good dupe for The Body Shop coconut body and I actually personally prefer the smell and texture of this one (and it doesn't hurt that it's half the price)!
I've also really been loving the Naked 3 palette from Urban Decay. I know there has been a ton of buzz over this, so you've probably heard about it already. The whole palette is versatile and I think it works really well on my fair skin tone. I have particularly been loving the shade Liar for all over the lid and I use either Factory or Mugshot for the outer corner of my lid and under the eye as my daily makeup look. They are all gorgeous taupe shades with an undertone of pinky-purple and seem to compliment green eyes really well.
Another beauty favorite this month I picked up on a whim. I bought the NYX Dark Circle Concealer to try it out and I ended up really liking it. It has nice coverage and blends really well using just your finger. I bought the lightest shade and it matches my skin tone, brightens under my eyes, and lasts all day.
As spring weather is (finally!) starting to get here I got the itch to paint my nails a bright color. I spotted one from Essie that I thought was perfect! Lapiz of Luxury is the perfect periwinkle blue/purple shade for spring. It has a gray undertone, so it's not too bright and, as always with Essie, it applies really well. I'll definitely be using this a lot throughout spring.
My fashion fave this month is my Converse Jack Purcell sneakers. I found them at my local Converse outlet store and they are super comfortable!!  The shade of orange matches a lot more than I thought they would, so I have been wearing them a lot lately. The canvas on the shoe is really soft and there is slight arch in the middle, so your feet don't hurt if you wear them out all day.
My last favorite for April is the Sonoma Coconut Breeze candle. I have a bit of a coconut obsession (as you may have guessed!), and this candle smells amazing! It's not too overpowering, but it smells just sweet enough and refreshing, like summer in a candle. It has a triple wick, so the scent releases faster, but it also burns for a really long time.
Let me know in the comments what your favorite product for April is and don't forget to subscribe!
