Current Favorite Lip Combo

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

While I was playing around with my lip product collection the other night before the Mr and I went out for a few drinks with friends, I put together two items that I'd never combined before- and I'm in love with the result!
I lined and filled in my lips with the Rimmel lip liner in East End Snob- a gorgeous natural-but-better rose that's also very affordable. It applies pretty smoothly and has a matte finish. Over the top of that I generously slathered on a coat of the Stila lip glaze in Fig. I'm crazy about this gloss, as it actually does what it says and leaves a glaze-like shiny gloss on your lips that is long-lasting once it sets. The color is a beautiful lavender based pink, as well.

What do you think of the combo? Have you tried either of these lip products before?

I hope everyone has a great New Year's and a fantastic start to 2015!

A Forgotten Winner: Urban Decay Naked Flushed

Tuesday, December 30, 2014

How could I have possibly forgotten about this palette? While shopping the beauty stash the other day looking to change up my blush, I saw my Urban Decay Naked Flushed palette in Streak and decided that was the winner for the day.
I added a little bronzer to my cheeks just to warm them up and went on to the star of the palette in my eyes- the blush! Oh my goodness, this blush is a dream- finely milled, highly pigmented, and a beautiful coral-pink. (Sidenote- I not ashamed to wear "summery" colors year-round. Who cares- do what you want, right?) The blush instantly brightens my face adding so much life, with just a little bit of product and it's definitely one of the longest lasting blushes that I've ever used. It was still clearly on into the evening which is pretty impressive, as my skin typically sucks up blush mid-way through the day. I was definitely impressed. A little bit of the highlighter finishes off the look for a subtle warm glow, as it is a peach-toned highlighter, instead of the typical champagne.
I think it's safe to say this will be my go-to cheek combo for a while. Have you tried this blush palette yet?

Clearance Finds

Wednesday, December 24, 2014

I love a good bargain, let me tell you. If I can get what I want for less, it's a win-win. I found some gems at TJ Maxx and Target for a great price the other day, so I thought I'd share them with you and hopefully you can find some deals there, too!
TJ Maxx had some Kat Von D lip products in a bin that I spotted on my way to the register, so I checked it out and grabbed two before cashing out. I've never tried anything from her line before, but I've heard good things, so I thought I'd try a couple. I went for an Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Outlaw and a Foiled Love Lipstick in Forever and Never. Both were bought for $6.99 each and they retail for $19.00 each. Quite a deal.
Forever and Never is peach-toned nude with with some golden shimmer, which I'm really loving for a dab-on-and-go color. I think it looks better lightly patted into the lips, rather than applied in a thick coat, as it can look a bit drying after a few hours. I also really like it under a light pink gloss for an extra dimension of color. Outlaw is a liquid lipstick that needs to be shaken up before it's applied. It goes on opaque and dries to an matte finish that will not budge once it sets. This would be lovely for a holiday party!

At Target, I spotted the Maybelline Color Show Jewels top coats in Gleaming Graphite and Precious Pearl. They were on clearance for $2.08 and are normally $2.99. I really enjoy the Color Show line and these two looked like such festive, glittery topcoats! I'm especially excited to try the white glitter over a dark polish.

If you've found any good bargains lately, I'd love to hear about them in the comments!

A Little Birthday Haul

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

It was my birthday on Saturday the 6th, so I figured I'd pick up a few things from Sephora and Ulta as a little treat from me to me. Why not? I'm not sure if you are all aware, but if you add your birthdate to your profiles for both stores you can get extra goodies and coupons during your birthday month! As if I need more incentives to shop...
I did a little online browse over at Sephora, since I had a $15 coupon to use and I was eligible for my birthday freebie of a mini Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara and Rouge Artist Natural lipstick in Copper Pink. I wasn't overly impressed with the mascara. One coat didn't do much to my lashes and I prefer others from the drugstore over this one. The lipstick turned out to be flattering and creamy, as well as long-lasting without being overly drying.
On top of those freebies, I ended up buying the cult favorite Nars Laguna bronzer, which I've been craving for ages and had never owned. (I know, I am a disgrace of a makeup lover.) The bronzer is as awesome as I was expecting- buildable, not too light or too dark, and easily gives that slight warmth that my face is craving at the moment.
On my online shopping extravaganza, I also decided to add the Laura Mercier shadow stick in Amethyst since I'd been wanting to try it out for quite some time. I'm crazy about this shadow after one use! The color is such a beautiful combo of lilac and taupe. It's really creamy, easy to apply and looks gorgeous with the edges blended out.
I decided to throw in the Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black and Nirvana White rollerball duo at the last minute before checking out and I'm so glad I did! I've smelled these in the store a few times and I always leaned toward the White scent; however, and trying them both I have to say that my favorite is definitely Black. Black is described as violet, sandalwood, and vanilla - right up my alley- , while the White is more of a floral, peony and musk scent. And talk about mini goodness- perfect size to chuck in your bag.
I also made my way to Ulta over the weekend to use my $10 off birthday voucher. I didn't have anything in mind to buy, but I browsed around the store (for way too long) and went on a bit of a nail polish buying frenzy. I ended up going for Nicole by OPI's Goodbye Shoes, a Nails Inc holiday trio in Tinseltown, and Essie's Summit of Style. I think the gray-green polish with a bit gold glitter on the tips will be awesome together. I sense some nail painting in my near future.
I apologize for not having any swatches, but I'll probably end up with a FOTD post featuring a lot of these very soon. Let me know if you've tried any of these before- I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Essie Winter Polishes

Tuesday, December 2, 2014

L-R: Head Mistress, Snake Rattle and Roll, Smokin' Hot, Wicked
One of my favorite parts about fall and winter is breaking out the darker and more intense colors in my nail polish collection. Four of my favorites are all from Essie, which isn't surprising since they have an amazing selection of colors and both an easy to apply and long lasting formula.

Head Mistress - One of my first and most loved Essie polishes. The deep, vibrant red red screams winter (and Christmas). It's such a classic color that I feel like an old-Hollywood starlet when I wear it.

Snake, Rattle and Roll - This metallic, silver-toned shade has a special trick- it's magnetic and when you hold the magnet in the lid over the wet polish is creates the subtle design that's featured on the lid. So different and easy to use! It looks great without the effect, too when you're craving a nice, metallic nail.

Smokin' Hot - The neutral cool-toned gray of this shade is perfect for days when I just don't know what color to choose. It goes with everything and would also look great as a base for almost any glitter for a festive feel.

Wicked - Last, but certainly not least, this burgundy-almost-black shade is probably my all-time favorite winter polish. I use it almost every time I get a pedicure during the fall and winter. It vamps up any look and is even described by Essie as a "sinister red". Very creative and descriptive wording.

What's your favorite Essie polish for winter?

Shopping the Men's Section

Wednesday, November 26, 2014

As much as I love shopping, sometimes it takes a little wander to an unexpected area to find something new. When I went to Target with my husband recently, I found a few fun shirts in the men's section that I never would have stumbled upon in the women's section.

This casual Star Wars hoodie fits so comfortably and is perfect for running errands on the weekend.
Hoodie- Target / Jeans- LC Lauren Conrad / Boots- Target

I had to get this hilarious bear-in-a-sweater sweatshirt. It's so cute for lounging around on a cold day!
Sweatshirt- Target / Yoga Pants- Target / Moccasins- Minnetonka

The last find in the men's section is this oar-printed sweater with a shawl collar. It has such a wintery vibe that I absolutely love and it's really warm and cozy!
Sweater- Target / T-Shirt- Target / Jeans- Target / Glitter Sneakers- Converse

A couple of tips for shopping in the men's section:
1. Try everything on. A size small in one shirt may fit well, while a size large in another may fit just as well.
2. Think outside of the box. Just because it's styled a certain way on the mannequin doesn't mean it can't be styled differently to look more feminine.
3. The men's section can be a great resource for loungewear, pajamas, and loose t-shirts. There might be some options there that aren't even an option in the women's section.

I hope this was helpful and got you to think a little differently next time you go shopping! Have you ever bought anything from the men's section?

Cargo Northern Lights Palette

Sunday, November 9, 2014

Eye shadow palettes are my weakness when it comes to beauty products. I'm addicted to buying anything that looks new, unique, or just plain pretty! I'm honestly running out of space in my designated "palette drawers", but I don't plan on not buying them anytime soon. I mean, come on...

With that being said, I maaaaay have picked up yet another palette the other day. In my defense, the Cargo Northern Lights palette is in a cute, red, snakeskin-like packaging and the shadow shades all screamed winter, so I really had no choice. (What I'm telling myself as I walk to the register.)
So let's talk about these shadows! I'm loving them so much- from the Northern and wintery names to the buttery and richly pigmented formula of each shadow, they are all stunning. Aurora is a beautiful true rose-gold that's perfect for an every-day shimmery eye look. Caspian Sea is a gorgeous, deep grey that can deepen any look.
L-R: Polar, Lapland, Aurora, Iceland, Caspian Sea, Arctic
I'm also crazy about Glacier, a dark, shimmery blue-grey that would be perfect for a holiday party smokey eye. Reindeer is another favorite, as the matte, burgundy shade is very complementary on green eyes and it's really blendable.
L-R: Fjord, Glacier, Finland, Osetra, Reindeer, Greenland
All in all I'm loving these shadows and definitely will be reaching for these often. What do you think about this palette? Will you be adding it to your collection too?

Ruffian - A Nail Polish Record Holder

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

I've never been more impressed with the staying power of a nail polish than I am with the Ruffian nail lacquer. This came in a Birchbox ages ago and haven't tried it until now. So let's dive right into the impressive part! I applied the polish a full week ago and it hasn't chipped at all! It's grown out a bit and just worn on the tips from normal wear and tear, but there are seriously no nicks anywhere. (And all of this with one coat!!) This is insanely impressive considering most of my polishes can only make it a few days with losing a chunk. The color is pretty unique too- Hedge Fund is an olive green with some golden, coppery flecks throughout. It's the perfect color for fall and I don't have anything like it!

Have you ever tried any of Ruffian's nail polishes?

Fluffy Sweater Weather

Friday, October 17, 2014

It was a chilly fall day so I decided to break out this fluffy sweater that I picked up recently. It's not bulky, but it was so warm! I'm in love with how fuzzy and soft it is and the little pockets on it! It's definitely going to be a fall and winter staple piece for me.

theBalm: A New Obsession

Saturday, October 11, 2014

theBalm is seriously awesome and I can't believe it's taken me this long to realize it. Aside from the retro and playful packaging, plus hilarious word-play ("DownBoy", "Cindy-Lou Manizer"- genius names), the brand has a large variety of quality products.
I'm slowly building my collection and have a few others on the constant 'to-be-bought list'. So far I've tried Stainiac, Mary-Lou Manizer, Instain - Houndstooth, and Mont Balm.
Stainiac ($17) is a lip and cheek stain, but I prefer to use it just on my lips. It's looks like an intense burgundy-wine shade in the tube, but it's a very sheer shade once applied. To be perfectly honest, I don't care for this product at all. I think it doesn't add a lot of color, it tends to apply patchy, and feels drying on the lips. So far this is the only miss I've come across in the line.
Mary-Lou Manizer ($24) is a definite favorite (see my last post about my favorite highlighters here). This is a gorgeous honey shade for works great for cheeks and the inner corners of the eye. It's so pretty when it catches the light! A little bit goes a long way and the glow it provides is very buildable.
Instain in Houndstooth ($22) I bought when I was on the hunt for a new blush for autumn the other day. It's a mauve-toned blush with the right mix of pink and purple. It's supposed to be a "staining" powder blush and have long lasting color. The first time I used this I was thoroughly impressed. It's highly pigmented, so you only need a little bit on your brush to get a nice flush of color and the lasting power of the color on my cheeks was incredible- it stayed on without touch-ups longer than any other blush I've ever tried!
Mont Balm ($15) is a gorgeous, shimmery eye shadow quad that looks like it was inspired by a winter skiing vacation- so cute! I was most drawn in by Aspen, the cranberry shade of the palette, as it screams "Wear me for fall and winter". The colors blend well and I love that it is in slim packaging with a magnetic closure. I'm in love with the cool-toned taupe shimmer that that Whistler gives, too!
I think next I'll be trying the ShadyLady palette, Bahama Mama bronzer, and Frat Boy blush. Please let me know your favorite products from theBalm that I should check out!

Red Lip

Friday, August 22, 2014

Lips: Rimmel Lip Liner in Red Diva, Rimmel Kate Moss Lipstick in 111 Kiss of Life

I've never been much of a bold lipstick kind of gal. Sometimes it feels a bit too "Hello, Sailor!" for me, but every girl needs that lip color that she can just throw on and feel powerful. A red lip to me screams confidence and I've finally found a shade that I feel I can (hopefully) pull off. I'm in love with this bright red matte lip for a night out, or if I'm just in a fearless mood for the day. What is your favorite lipstick when you're feeling daring?

Dinner at The Silo

Sunday, August 3, 2014

Saturday night my husband surprised me and drove us to The Silo for dinner. I've never been there before, but I've heard of it (and seen it on an episode of Man vs. Food)! It's a short drive from where we live and right on Lake Ontario with a fantastic view! The weather was perfect- not too hot or cold with a nice breeze coming in from the water. It was so nice to sit and watch the boats out on the lake while we ate.
It's a super casual place- order at the counter and wait until your number is called to pick it up. I went with a cheeseburger, sweet potato fries, and pink lemonade while my husband got the famous "haystack"- a steak and cheese sandwich with a pile of mini fries/hash browns on top. I tried a bite and it was delicious! I'll be getting that next time!
If you ever happen to be in the Lewiston/Niagara Falls area, it's definitely worth stopping here, both for the food and the view!

Tarte Rainforest After Dark

Sunday, July 20, 2014

After doing a bit of browsing for makeup the other day, I stumbled across the new Tarte Rainforest After Dark palette and knew that I wanted to try it out. First off, the name and packaging are both so mysterious and unique that I was sucked right in. I love that gold snake with the crystal on the lid!
The palette itself is quite large and comes with six eye shadows, a blush, a bronzer, and a highlighter. Each product is nicely pigmented and finely milled, so they are very easy to work with. A little bit goes a long way and they're all very buildable. The first time I used it I went for the three purple toned shades for my lids. They blend well together and have really good color payoff. The dark purple looks intense, but trust me it's very wearable, even for daytime. The blush is such a beautiful rosy pink and gives the cheeks a natural flush. I would expect no less from a Tarte blush! I really like the warm shade of the bronzer, too. Probably one of the best bronzer colors I've found in a while. My only complaint would be that the shape of the bronzer and highlighter sections make it a bit difficult to fit a larger brush in them.
Overall I am absolutely loving this new palette from Tarte and am really excited to try some different combinations with it! Are any of you thinking of trying this?
